Loch Fyne

Description of the site:

The site is the garden ground surrounding a detached cottage-style house on the main road at the Eastern edge of Aberlady. A new extension (a 'glass box' conservatory) and new garage were to be constructed which would cause major impact on the garden to the West of the house. This would have the effect of creating a new arrival point at the house for visitors and the present front door would be somewhat downgraded to more of a service entrance for postmen and the like. A sketch plan of likely proposals was provided and full CAD drawings were available from the architect. Additionally areas of monoblock paving (since before construction of a new boundary wall) existed to the North of the house which had to be dealt with in the area which has the best views out to the nearby Aberlady Bay.

An area of rough ground to the East of the house had also have to be considered. At present a right of access exists across this ground with the access path crossing it on a diagonal line cutting it in two. The client is negotiating to have this path rerouted to run round the edge of the property to a gate at the far North-east corner.

The house lies within the village Conservation area and a stone wall on the South boundary is grade C listed.

Clients’ brief:

The client wanted a garden to fit with the house and the site, taking into account the blend of traditional and modern that the new extension would provide. To this end he did not want a cottage style garden, leaning towards the philosophy of "less is more" and preferring simplicity over complexity.

The area of ground to the East is more of a long term project, dependent as it is on the successful outcome of current negotiations which mean that this is likely to occur over a fairly extended period of time. The idea of an orchard was discussed as a possible use of this area.

Current situation:

The garden immediately in front of the new extension and the area along the side of the house have both been completed.  Work has still to commence on the area of rough ground behind the house to the East.
